Column Information

Column Name

This is the name of the column. If the “Grade Center Name” is left blank, this is the name for the column header and the name students will see in the My Grades area.

Grade Center Name

This allows you to set an alternate name for the column which will appear as the column header in the grade center and the name students will see in the My Grades area. This is helpful when you need the official assignment title to be something specific for reporting purposes but you want to display something else to students.

Description

Use this field if you’d like to provide a quick description of what the column is used for. This is helpful if there are multiple faculty teaching in the same online classroom.

Primary Display

The primary display is the scoring option that will display to students. You can only choose one scoring option for students. The most typical option is “Score” which shows the number of points the student achieved.

The options in this box are influenced by the grading schemas that are available. If you choose “Letter”, please be sure the grading schema has been configured to the USA schema and not the Blackboard default. Please reach out on onlineedsupport@usa.edu for more information about schemas.

Secondary Display

The secondary display will show a secondary score in the grade center. This secondary display is visible to faculty only. Use of this option is not typical for most grade center columns.

Category

The category is used to identify what type of assessment the grade center column is for. This is important when weighted grading is used for the course where some types of assignments are worth more/less than others.

Blackboard automatically assigns default categories to assessments but manually created grade columns are given a default of “No category”. Faculty can modify existing categories or create their own. For more information on this, please reach out to onlineedsupport@usa.edu.

Points Possible

The number of points the assignment is worth. Please use whole numbers only.

Associated Rubrics

Interactive rubrics can be associated with assignments or grade center columns for grading purposes or for secondary evaluation. Students are only able to see rubrics with Type set to “Used for Grading” and if the “Show Rubric to Students” option is set to “Yes, without rubric scores” or “Yes, with rubric scores”.

Dates

Date Created

This is set by Blackboard when you create a column or assignment.

Due Date

This field allows you to set a due date for an assignment or grade center column. If the grade center column is shown to students, they will also see this due date on their Blackboard Course Calendar. It is highly recommended that you use the Due Date field as many students sync their Blackboard Course Calendar with their personal devices.

Options

Include this column in Grade Center calculations

If this option is set to “Yes”, the points for this assignment will count toward the Total column. Select “No” for this when the assignment or grade needs to be tracked and shown to students but does not count toward the final grade.

Show this column to students

When this option is set to “Yes” students can see the column and their grade in the My Grades area as well as on the course calendar (if a due date is set). If this option is set to “No” students will not be able to see their grade.

Show statistics (average and median) for this column to students in My Grades

When this option is set to “Yes” students will be able to see the average and median grade for the assignment. It is recommended that you set this option to “No”.
