Leaving Audio or Video Grade Feedback

Faculty can leave audio or video grade feedback for most Blackboard assignments. This can be the only feedback or it can be supplemental to text feedback. Instructors can record short audio or webcam feedback without any additional software. You can also use Kaltura Media to leave longer video feedback or feedback with document or screen recording enabled.

Leaving Feedback

To record audio or video feedback, go to the full grade center and open the assignment for grading as you usually would. Typically this is by selecting the “Grade Attempt” button next to the student’s submission in the grade center but can vary depending on the assignment type.

In the grading sidebar select the down arrow to expand the panel and then open the full text box editor by selecting the “A” icon at the bottom of the Feedback to Learning box. The text box editor will open in a pop-up window.

Record Short Audio or Webcam Video Feedback:

When using this option, audio and video recordings are limited to 5 minutes in length and do not include a screen recording option. To record longer videos or to use screen recording capabilities for grade feedback, please skip ahead to the “Record Video Feedback with Screen Recording” section.

In the text box editor, select the “Insert Recording” option (microphone icon in the bottom row). You may be prompted by your browser to allow it to record audio and video - select “Ok” or “Yes” to grant this permission.

A recording window will open in your browser. When you are ready to record, select the “Record” button.

Once you have finished your recording, select “Save and Exit” and then “Insert Recording” to complete your recording and share it with the student. You should see a recording icon and the title of your recording in the feedback window. Don’t forget to click Submit to save the grade and feedback.

To Record Video Feedback with Screen Recording:

To record video feedback longer than 5 minutes, or that includes document or screen recording, you can use the Kaltura Capture mashup tool. In the text box editor select the “Mashups” button and then “Kaltura Media”. If you have previously recorded the feedback, you can select it from your media library. If you need to record new feedback, select the “Add New” and then “Kaltura Capture”. More information about using Kaltura Capture can be found in the Launching Kaltura Capture tutorial.

Once you have recorded or selected your video, click “Submit” to add it to the Grading Feedback area. Video added with the mashup tool will appear as an embedded video.

Don’t forget to click “Submit” again on the grading page, as seen in the screenshot below, to save and submit the grade and all associated feedback.
