Overriding a Grade

Instructors have the ability to use an override grade. An override grade takes precedence over all other grade entries, including attempts a student submits after you assign an override grade.

For that student, you can assign an override grade that takes precedence over all other grades and future attempts.

When you override a grade, the Override icon appears in the cell.

When you assign a grade to a cell with no attempt for an assignment or a test, it's considered an override grade and the icon will appear in the grade cell. You can assign a grade for a gradable interactive tool (Discussion Board, Journal, Blog) when no activity exists as well, but no icon appears in the grade cell.

You also won't see an icon if you override a grade from a rubric.

Override a Grade

We recommend that you assign an override grade from the Manual Override tab on the Grade Details page. You can add feedback for the student and notes for yourself or any other instructors about the grade change. You'll have a record of why you chose to override any future attempts.

  1. Go to the Course Management menu below the main course menu and select Full Grade Center.

  2. In the grade center, select the options menu icon next to the student submission you wish to view and then select the “View Grade Details” option from drop down.

  3. Select the “Manual Override” tab and then enter your override grade, any feedback to the student, and any grading notes to yourself and other instructors.

An override grade takes precedence over all other grade entries, including attempts a student submits after you assign an override grade.
