Using SafeAssign in an Assignment

Faculty have the ability to add SafeAssign Plagiarism detection to new or existing assignments in their course. SafeAssign is owned by Blackboard and fully integrated into the Blackboard Learn platform.

Creating a New Assignment with SafeAssign

  1. In your course, navigate to the unit or folder where you want the assignment to appear for students.

  2. Select the “Assessments” button at the top of the page and then select “Assignment” to open the Create Assignment page.

  3. On the Create Assignment page fill in the requested information. For more information about creating assignments and an explanation of the various fields, see Creating an Assignment.

  4. Expand the “Submission Details” area on the Create Assignment page.

  5. Under “Plagiarism Tools” check the box for “Check submissions for plagiarism using SafeAssign” to enable SafeAssign.

  6. If you want students to be able to see their SafeAssign Originality report, check the second box as well: “Allow students to view SafeAssign originality report for their attempts”

  7. If this is a draft assignment or one where students will need to resubmit the same text, you can check the third box, “Exclude submissions from the Institutional and Global References Databases”, to keep the assignment submission from being saved in the SafeAssign Database.

  8. Click Submit at the bottom of the page when you are finished.

When you create an assignment using SafeAssign, a grade column is automatically created in the Grade Center. The Originality Report will appear in the grading panel of the assignment. For more information, see Viewing and Interpreting SafeAssign Originality Reports.

SafeAssign only works with submission assignments (those where students submit a document or textual answer directly to Blackboard). It is not currently available for Discussion, Blog, or Journal assignments. However, faculty do have the option to use SafeAssign DirectSubmit to check these types of assignments.

Adding SafeAssign to an Existing Assignment

  1. Confirm that you are enrolled in the course as an instructor and that you have Edit Mode turned to “On”.

  2. Navigate to the assignment and select the options menu (the chevron icon) next to the assignment title and then “Edit”.

  3. Expand the “Submission Details” area on the Create Assignment page.

  4. Under “Plagiarism Tools” check the box for “Check submissions for plagiarism using SafeAssign” to enable SafeAssign.

  5. If you want students to be able to see their SafeAssign Originality report, check the second box as well: “Allow students to view SafeAssign originality report for their attempts”

  6. If this is a draft assignment or one where students will need to resubmit the same text, you can check the third box, “Exclude submissions from the Institutional and Global References Databases”, to keep the assignment submission from being saved in the SafeAssign Database.

  7. Click Submit at the bottom of the page when you are finished.

The Originality Report will appear in the grading panel of the assignment. For more information, see Viewing and Interpreting SafeAssign Originality Reports.
