Creating a Group Assignment

If you use groups in your course, you can set up group assignments. Group assignments allow each group to submit one collaborative assignment for all members. You only need to grade the assignment once, and all group members receive the same grade and feedback.

Create a Group Assignment

To create a group assignment, follow the steps outlined in Creating an Assignment, but be sure to select “Group Submission” as the assignment type in the grading details area. Once you do this, an additional box will appear asking you to select which groups you would like to participate in this assignment.

In the image below, Group 1 is selected to participate in the assignment, but Group 2 is not.

If there are no groups set up in your course, you will receive a pop-up warning message letting you know you that. Students cannot participate in a group assignment unless they are enrolled in a group and that group has been added to the assignment.

Good to Know

You can create one assignment, and assign all groups to participate, or you can create separate assignments for individual groups. This is helpful for assignments where different groups will need to participate in the same activity, such as creating a presentation, but based on different source material, such as a different case study for each group.

To create separate assignments, follow the same steps above for each group, adding only one group to the Group Submission “Selected Items” box for each assignment.

Only students enrolled in the groups selected to participate in the group assignment will be able to see it in their classroom or My Grades area. If a student is unable to see the assignment, make sure that the correct groups are selected in the Submission Details area and that the student is assigned correctly to one of those groups.

Grading Group Assignments

When you grade a group assignment, you only need to grade the group submission once and all members of the group will see the same grade and feedback. You have the option to go into individual student grades and modify them if needed to account for things like group role and participation points.
