Creating an Assignment

  1. In your course, navigate to the unit or folder where you want the assignment to appear for students.

  2. Select the “Assessments” button at the top of the page and then select “Assignment” to open the Create Assignment page.

  3. On the Create Assignment page fill in the below information:

Assignment Information

  • Title - this is the title of the assignment that students will see in the course. By default, this is also the same title that will appear in the Grade Center and in My Grades.

  • Instructions - these are the instructions for the assignment that students will see.

  • Assignment Files - include any files here that students may need to complete the assignment, such as templates or case studies.

If you are adding a file that is a required reading or something else that should be done before students start the assignment, it might be better to add this to the Learning Materials area of the unit.

Due Dates

  • Due Dates - enter the due date for the assignment. Students will see this due date in their course calendar and can opt to have assignment reminders sent to them automatically as well.

Due Dates are in Eastern Time and do not adjust automatically. For example, an assignment set to be due at 11:59PM will be due at 2:59PM Pacific Time. Please keep this in mind when selecting a time and make sure students are aware.

Grading

  • Points Possible - enter the points value for the assignment.

  • Associated Rubrics - this area allows you to associate a rubric with the assignment. Rubrics can be for grading purposes or for secondary evaluation. Students are only able to see grading rubrics. Blackboard gives you the option of allowing students to see the rubric before and after grading, only after grading, or not at all. For more information on Blackboard Rubrics you can visit Blackboard’s Instructor Help: Rubrics

  • Submission Details

    • Assignment Type - Select whether this is an individual submission or a group assignment. For additional steps and information regarding group assignments see Creating a Group Assignment.

    • Number of Attempts - Select the number of times the student will be allowed to submit the assignment. If you select Multiple Attempts, you will also need to indicate which grade will count or whether it will be the average.

    • Plagiarism Tools - whether to use the SafeAssign Plaigiarism Detection Tool or not.

  • Grading Options

    • Enable Anonymous Grading - this option will hide all student names from you in the grading view. If you enable this option you will NOT be able to identify who submitted the assignment through Blackboard. However, students should be informed that this will be used and asked to exclude their name from their title page and/or the file name.

    • Enable Delegated Grading - this option is intended to be used in courses where there are many students and multiple TAs or Graders are assisting the faculty with the grading. It is unlikely you will need to use this option.

  • Display of Grades -

    • Display Grade As - Students are only able to see the Primary grade display. Use this option to set whether students should see the total points, percentage, Complete/Incomplete, etc. If you use Letter, be sure that you have updated the grade schema to match the USA standard and not Blackboard default. For assistance with this, please reach out to onlineedsupport@usa.edu

    • Include in Grade Center Calculations - If this option is unchecked, the points for this assignment will not be counted toward the Total or Weighted Total columns. This is useful when you want to offer an assignment with a grade and feedback but not count it toward the final grade, such as a draft assignment.

    • Show to Students in My Grades - This option must be checked in order for students to see their grade for this assignment.

    • Show Average and Median Statistics to Students - This option allows students to see the average and median for this assignment. It is NOT recommended that you use this option.

Availability

  • Limit Availability - set the dates in this section when you want the assignment to be visible to students.

Availability Dates are in Eastern Time and do not adjust automatically. For example, an assignment set to be available at 8AM will not be visible until 11AM Pacific Time. Please keep this in mind when selecting a time.

  • Track number of views - this option allows Blackboard to track how many times the assignment is clicked on for reporting purposes.
