Overview: Kaltura Media

What is Kaltura?

Kaltura Media is a media delivery service that is integrated into Blackboard and allows faculty and students to record, edit, and publish web cam videos, screen captures, and presentations for use in the online classroom.

Using Kaltura to Record or Add Videos

Use Kaltura Express Capture to record audio or video directly from the browser without the need to install any additional software.

To record a video using Express Capture go to the My Media module on your Blackboard homepage (My Institution) to open your My Media library. Then select “Add New” and “Express Capture” from the drop down menu. Push the large, red “Record” button in the middle of the video screen to begin recording.

To change the audio or video input, select the gears icon in the upper left corner of the video screen.

To record slide presentations and screen captures you will need to install the Kaltura Capture software.

Once Kaltura Capture is installed on your computer, record a presentation by going to the My Media module on your Blackboard homepage (My Institution) to open your My Media library. Then select “Add New” and “Kaltura Capture” from the drop down menu. When prompted by your browser to open or launch the Kaltura Capture software, select “Yes”.

You can add interactive quiz questions and reflection points to any of your videos. To add ungraded quiz questions to a video, go to the My Media module on your Blackboard homepage (My Institution) to open your My Media library. Then select “Add New” and “Video Quiz” from the drop down menu. Then choose the video you wish to create the quiz from. Your video quiz will be saved as a copy of the original video. For more information about adding quiz questions, please see the video below on creating a quiz using the Kaltura Editor:

For faculty, once you have created a quiz using the Kaltura Editor, you can make it a graded quiz in Blackboard. To do this, in Blackboard in the Learning Unit, select “Assessments” at the top and then “Kaltura Video Quiz”. On the next screen, choose the video quiz you want to use from your media library and then fill in the points value.
