Adding a Grading Rubric to a Discussion Assignment

You can add a Rubric to the discussion assignment to allow for grading student threads. Prior to posting students will be able to access the rubric from the My Grades area.

Access the Discussions page from within your course:

Select the Discussions link from the left sidebar of the course page. Locate the Discussion Board title, and then click the Options Menu drop down arrow. Select Edit.

Forum Settings:

Scroll to Forum Settings to add an existing rubric to the discussion assignment.

By default, the “No Grading in Forum” button is selected in the Grade section. Click on the toggle button titled “Grade Discussion Forum: Points possible.”

In the Associated Rubrics section, click on Add Rubric, and select one of the three scoring selections from the blue dropdown box.

The Select Rubrics option box will open. Select the rubric for the discussion assignment by clicking in the checkbox to the left of the Name. Click Submit.

Click the OK button to assign the maximum points included in the Rubric.

Click the No button to access the blue dropdown box with the three scoring selections, then select the desired option.

The No option will change to a green checkmark.

Select all other preferences, then click Submit to save and exit the Forum Settings.

How Students Access the Discussion Rubric Prior to Posting

A student will click on the My Grades link located on the left sidebar of their course. The My Grades list of assignments and discussions will become available to view.

After the student selects the View Rubric option, the Rubric Detail box will open. The student will click the Exit button to close.

How Students Access their Discussion Grade

A student will click on the My Grades link located on the left sidebar of their course. The list of Assignment and Discussions will become available. The student will click on the desired title which will then open the grade details and instructor remarks.
